Three Support Options

Asylum seekers in the UK who are destitute may be eligible for support from the Home Office, primarily consisting of three main types:
-
Accommodation: This includes free, furnished housing, which may be a flat, house, or room in a hostel or hotel, with utility bills (gas, electricity, water, Council Tax) covered. The location is typically outside London and the South East and is provided on a no-choice basis.
-
Financial Support: Asylum seekers receive a weekly cash allowance or pre-paid debit card (Aspen card) to cover essential living needs like food, clothing, toiletries, and travel. The standard amount is currently around £49.18 per person per week.
-
Access to Services: Asylum seekers and their dependants have free access to the NHS (National Health Service), including GP services, hospital treatment, free prescriptions, and dental care. Children also have the same entitlement to state education as other children in the UK.

-
Heather Hine is a social prescriber in Coventry who provides mental health support to asylum seekers and refugees.
-
A social prescriber acts as a bridge between healthcare and local support like exercise groups, debt advice, or loneliness support, especially for those with long-term conditions or isolation.
-
They listen to what matters to the person, help create a plan, and link them to activities or groups that improve wellbeing, focusing on holistic, community-based solutions rather than just clinical treatment.
Far Right Social Media Comments

-
Alongside all the positive work charities do across the UK, there is also negative news.
-
Far-right groups often exhibit a negative focus because their ideologies are built upon perceptions of threat, grievance, and a desire for an exclusionary social hierarchy. This worldview is sustained by psychological needs for order, identity, and significance in the face of uncertainty and rapid societal change.
